Upgrading build - new monitor suggestions: 3440x1440 or 4k

My wife and I have recently purchased a new house and I plan on making a gaming room/office and going all out with the accent lighting, etc. My build is about 3.5 years old at this point so I am either looking at doing some upgrades or a new build. I have been using a now old Samsung 4K VA monitor under my current setup and this is one area that I want to do it right this time around. I haven’t decided which new graphics card I will get yet, likely a RTX 2080 or RTX 2080 TI (seems like Newegg has the EVGA black for 1,069 right now) but want to get a top notch display.

I am mainly trying to decide between either an ultrawide 3440x1440 120hz display (either X34P or AW3418hw) or a 4K 144hz (XB273K). I hear people rave about the ultrawides which is why I really want to try it but my main concern is that these are older displays than the new 4K 144hz. Nothing is future proof but I ultimately want to get the longest life out of it and there doesn’t seem to be much solid news on 3440x1440 165hz just yet.

Not sure why you're judging the difference between the two as longevity. Having an ultrawide is a completely different experience than having a 16:9 monitor.

It seems like you care a lot more about refresh rates rather than the aspect ratio. So I'd focus on that first.

Not to nitpick but I'm pretty sure you meant AW3418DW. The HW is 2560x1080 while the DW is 3440x1440. I know someone who made that error, luckily he was able to exchange it easy enough. I, too, own the AW3418DW @ 3440x1440 and it is an absolutely amazing monitor. Highly recommend!

I ended up getting a X34 instead (ordered today). I could get a better deal on it without tax. Now I just need to figure out a card, currently leaning towards a Strix/MSI/Zotac 2080.
