I am looking to buy a used gaming rig. I found one at 1179 USD dollars. I don't know if it is a good deal or not. Does the cpu and gpu go along good together?

I would like to go with a Intel cpu

Well, in that case, that used PC is actually pretty killer.

Not really simple 4 core processor(matched or beat by a 9400F), good video card if it has not been ran to death, small SSD the 850 series are fairly old.

For about 200 bucks more he could build new and better might not get as good of a video card but at least it would be new.

I would offer him about 750 tops.

For slightly more, you can get a better CPU and equivalent GPU alongside double the storage and an upgrade path to the next generation of Ryzen CPU's if you wish. It doesn't come with a liquid cooler but Ryzen CPU's tend to come with decent stock coolers which can handle a good overclock.

Uh they can get up to an 18 core i9 on that socket. What do you mean about an upgrade path.

Also for $60 cheaper you can get the r5 1600 which once overclocked is almost the same as the 2600x

For gaming, that isn't really a viable CPU as it has an extremely prohibitive price. CPU's on the X299 are expensive to the point where it makes sense to just go with a Ryzen based CPU.

Also, fair enough on the 1600, didn't really take that into account.

Also, Ryzen 3000 being released in July (<4 months). So going the cheaper cpu route might be better. Since Ryzen 3000 is expected to be a worthwhile upgrade. There is a possibility of a 16 core / 32 thread Ryzen variant.

Well it depends. For a lot of games an OC i5 will outperform an R5. It really depends on what they are playing tho.

And if they wanted to they can upgrade to something like a 7800x which is basically a 8700k for a similar price.

Both option are good. It just depends on what the OP wants to do.

Right at the same price, adequate storage, 2 more cores on the processor, RTX 2070 not quite as good as the 1080ti but a very good card and everything comes with a new warranty.
