2.5” HDD options for laptop - 7mm vs 15mm

My new laptop has an empty bay for a 2.5" HDD. I found a 2TB 2.5" 7mm drive and a 4TB 2.5" 15mm drive online. How can I tell if my laptop can fit the 15mm drive or just the 7mm drive?

Try opening it and measuring. (No, I'm not kidding.)

You could also look more closely at reported specs, but it's entirely possible that they slightly under-report clearance. However, most common 2.5" drive bays these days seem to max out at either just over 7mm or 9mm. Sometimes there's a metal bracket that can be removed to get a bit more clearance, though.
