Free Kaspersky trial is about to run out on my new laptop. What is the best free antivirus/malware/computer protection software etc. that I can download? Thanks

You could go with Kaspersky Free, Bitdefender, or Avast, just to name a few.

Don't know why you were downvoted. These are all good options.

Perhaps because you didn't include malewarebytes, lol.

People like downvoting, I guess. :P

I only include MWB if I'm discussing the whole security stack and it always goes in the scanner section for me. The last time I ever recommended the paid version, they still offered lifetime licenses.

Avast+Malwarebytes.

Been using that for the last 5+ years on every PC in the house. Both are free.

Kapersky does have a free mode.

Windows Defender blocks all common viruses, and a few obscure ones.

Common sense + regular virus scans with malwarebytes.

You shouldn't rely on free AV/AM, but if you had to just use Windows Defender at minimum. Free software requires the user to complete the scans on their own while paid are active scanning or even allow scheduled scans.

Windows defender is the first line of defense. It catches the viruses before you open them. Well, most of them. Malewarebytes is for when it actually gets on your PC and is for removing it, and for scanning once in a while if you're not sure you have a virus or not.
