Operating system survey

fn230

Hi! Since we did a CPU/GPU survey, I figured why not do an operating system survey.

Before posting, please read the recommendations below! I'm getting a lot of incomplete data.

  • Specify which computer(s) the operating system(s) are running on. For example, Main desktop. Smartphones will not be listed, but SBCs like the Raspberry Pi will.
  • If you can, specify the architecture of the operating system (not the computer! I only care about the operating system).
  • If you are a Windows user, specify which version of Windows you have (e.g. 10, 7, 8.1, Vista, etc.), the edition (e.g. Home, Pro, etc.), and if relevant, the Service Pack. For example, Windows XP Home Edition SP3.
  • If you are a macOS user, specify the version of macOS. For example, macOS 10.12 Sierra.
  • If you are a Linux user, specify the distribution of Linux (e.g. Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, etc.). Also specify the version of that distribution, unless it's a pure rolling distribution like Arch. For example, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS "Xenial Xerus".
  • If you're using something else, such as FreeBSD or Plan 9 or whatever, use your own best judgment.

What if we dual-boot?

exiguous is a 64-bit desktop system that principally runs straight Debian Linux, but I occasionally crash back into Windows 7 (Home Premium, I think) to play games.

(My laptop, OTOH, runs 64-bit Debian Linux all the time.)

List both for said computer. I'll list the two operating systems under the same entry.

  • Desktop: Windows 7 Home Premium, x86_64
  • Desktop: Debian "Sid", x86_64
  • Laptop: Debian "Sid", x86_64

Debian "Sid" is the "unstable" version of Debian (as opposed to the "testing" and "stable" repositories). It's where all the latest versions of apps and libraries land, but every so often the dependencies become inconsistent and updates become a headache. If you're prepared to deal with the occasional hiccup, "Sid" is the way to have the latest and greatest of everything.

  • 1 point

Yeah, I know what Sid is. I've never actually used it, but I have used testing before.

Gen.3 has been pretty good. Battery life is more than satisfactory for me, the touchpad has real buttons, the keyboard is sane (unlike the Gen.2 which was mad as pants), and Debian Linux installed with no issues and no tweaks necessary.

My only real complaint is the proprietary Ethernet port, presumably because a genuine 8P8C (a/k/a RJ-45) Ethernet jack wouldn't fit.

I have one of these

The T460 is a nice box.

Ubuntu/Mint-based: 7
Debian-based: 4

Erm... Little detail: Ubuntu and Mint are themselves based on Debian.

  • 2 points

I'm aware, but Ubuntu is distinct and derived enough from Debian that the two are not totally compatible, software-wise. So I consider it a separate family.

  • 2 points

So distinct in fact that Mint even offers a Debian edition called LMDE. So Mint can be Ubuntu based or Debian based and they are considered separate distros.

  • 2 points

Yep; in fact, I've used LMDE before. Turns out it's not quite my thing, but I liked it.

  • 2 points

Yep, a .deb from debian may not install on Ubuntu.

  • 1 point

This is accurate, and vice versa - an Ubuntu package may not install on Debian.

  • 1 point

Rainmeter, huh. If you ever consider trying Linux, might I recommend a KDE-based distribution? It's the closest thing Linux has to Rainmeter.

  • 1 point

I would for if it wasn't for the fact that there isn't really much purpose to replace something that works fine for what I need it to do. The less complicated it is, the better. Basically I don't want to be switching OS'es all the time

  • 1 point

Of course, I completely understand that.

  • 1 point

Still though Linux interests me. I might start to play around with it if I have another PC to mess around with

  • 1 point

If you're interested enough and don't mind paying, you can find Core 2 Duo machines on eBay for like $40-50. Most Linux distributions run great on C2Ds. Could also run it in a virtual machine, which won't cost you anything, though there will be a visible performance hit.

I'd recommend a Raspberry Pi if it weren't for the fact that it's pretty slow compared to a Core 2 Duo. It's amazing for the right things, but it isn't a good way to let the OS stretch its legs if you really want to play around with it.

Gaming Desktop(elements) - Ubuntu Linux 'Yakkety Yak' 16.10 64-bit/Windows 10 Home 64-bit (WindowsToGo on eHDD)

'Experiment' Desktop (e2180)- Arch Linux installed on a 4GB Flash Drive with XFCE desktop. (I think it's version 231)

Raspberry Pi B+(AWESOMENESS) - Raspbian (32-bit obviously cause it's a 32-bit ARMv6 processor)

I also have a 'multiboot' USB with around 5 distros on it... does that count? And also many, many VM's with almost every Linux distro ever made.

Nah, I don't count virtual machines or live USBs.

Wouldn't Puppy Slacko fall into Slackware?

Same for tahrpup , etc.

  • 1 point

I mean, technically? But at the same time, Puppy is also defined by its build system Woof-CE. So I'm listing anything built with Woof-CE as Puppy, even if it is technically a Slackware/Ubuntu/whatever-compatible.

Windows 10 Pro 64 bit

Want to use Linux but I really don't see a reason why for me.

If it ain't broke, then don't fix it. Windows works fine for you? Stick with it. You can always try Linux in a virtual machine if you get curious about it.

Regarding the Chromebook idea, I recommend instead getting a used/refurbished ThinkPad or Latitude. Cheap, and installing Linux should be quite hassle-free.

I like the idea of using Chrome OS and loading Crouton for Unity, KDE, or Xfce to install Linux.

I do have an older Dell Inspiron that's more than capable of loading Linux.

Updated own machines. The laptop and desktop have traded operating systems; laptop now runs Manjaro and desktop runs Antergos. We'll see how that goes over.

Windows XP has a 64-bit version, but it's very rare. Safe to assume that the machine has a 32-bit OS.
