Several months ago we launched PortablePicker. We populated the site with laptops and tablets, and brought over peripherals and accessories from PCPartPicker.

Since that time, many people have asked about upgrade compatibility for laptops, which PortablePicker doesn't currently support. We've also been tracking the possibility of external GPUs for laptops. With those things in mind, we've decided to sunset PortablePicker on July 31st in favor of moving laptop selection over to PCPartPicker. The end goal is to offer both upgrade compatibility and external GPU selection support for laptop buyers. It just made more sense to have it here instead, and to maintain one site instead of two for that.

We hope you'll find the upcoming integration useful, and please let us know if you have any feature requests or feedback.

Interesting. I'm not rly surprised considering PortablePicker was a ghost town

G_I_L 1 point 33 months ago

4th yay! And that is a nice idea, since no one ever uses PortablePicker.

wait, portablepicker.com and pcpartpicker.com will merge? and they'll have laptop upgradabability and external gpu compatibility?

philip staff submitter 10 Builds 3 points 33 months ago

Yes. External GPU compatibility is likely to occur before laptop upgradability (due to better info available), but we hope to have both available eventually.

Thanks :)

Great Idea!

My only suggestions: somehow make it blatantly obvious that laptops are supported on the site for those who don't frequent the forums.

I think its a great idea. One site, one stop shop.

external GPUs

PLEASE!!! I have my iMac which isn't what you call a gaming machine. So I would LOVE this feature!

GentlemanShark 1 Build 1 point 33 months ago

Does it have Thunderbolt 3?

Geode1010 2 Builds 1 point 33 months ago

Unfortunately no, it has 2

GentlemanShark 1 Build 1 point 33 months ago

Then, it wouldn't work out too well.

Geode1010 2 Builds 1 point 33 months ago

Ik, ik. But my Gpu is bottlenecks every other component so that's why I wanted one

GentlemanShark 1 Build 1 point 33 months ago

Still, the bandwidth isn't enough for any enjoyable experience.

BryanMUFC 1 point 33 months ago

Great! I believe you've made right decision, Philip (especially considering I don't even have a PP account).

Xorex64 1 point 32 months ago

What do you mean by sunset? Will the site be accessable? Or will we just not be able to post topics/comments?

philip staff submitter 10 Builds 2 points 32 months ago

I turned off the site last night. We've moved laptop listings here instead.
