Description

This is my transition from console gaming to PC gaming/CAD. I'm 16 and I have saved up for two months to buy all the parts. I did tons of research, and after 4 parts lists I finally confirmed the parts that I wanted to use. Let me say that after I set everything up, this computer runs flawlessly. I ran into a couple issues while building it, such as the dram_led lighting up red, and there was no picture, but I took it apart and re-assembled it, and it worked fine. All of my chassis fans are automated (lowers/raises RPM based on temps) via my motherboard, along with the cpu cooler and gpu. Thanks to everyone who helped me out, I'm looking forward to some awesome gaming!

Also, I found the GPU brand new on Craigslist for $200, and I got the monitor for $140.

EDIT: I fixed the intake and exhaust fans.

Part Reviews

CPU

Will add a review when I overclock.

CPU Cooler

Amazing cpu cooler thus far. Keeps my CPU at 30 C idle. Super quiet and looks amazing.

Motherboard

This motherboard is outstanding. As a first time builder, it was a breeze to work with. If I ran into any issues the manual went into detail. The BIOS is very neat. Also looks amazing. I haven't overclocked with it yet, but I will soon.

Memory

Lightning fast memory. Have had no issues with it.

Storage

Generic SSD. Can't beat the price, gets the job done.

Storage

What can I say? Good hard drive.

Video Card

Absolutely amazing piece of equipment. I've tested a few games on it so far and have had no problems at all. Ultra settings 60+ fps.

Case

Wonderful case. Looks beautiful and is VERY easy to work in.

Power Supply

Gold rated, and has all black cables. No colorful ugly cables. Awesome PSU.

Case Fan

Good amount of air flow. Quiet and looks cool.

Monitor

Thin borders, amazing detail and has a gaming mode you can switch on and off.

Keyboard

Really cool combo, nice colors.

My build is going to be for Fallout 4 at first so I imagine for this kind of game it'd be a good set up and gratz on the great build :)

Pretty much for every game it will get 60+ fps on ultra settings. Fallout 4 will probably get more fps on ultra settings. Witcher 3 gets 50-60 fps on ultra.

Why did you chose the z170-a and not the z170 pro gaming?

  • 1 point

Because it's white and I read the reviews on both. It will be fine for the amount of overclocking im going to do, and both of them are pretty much the same. Mostly for aesthetics though (and the fact that it had everything I wanted in a motherboard) :)

Great build! Just wondering if you had the need to overclock it yet? any thoughts so far? I also do CAD, I know that it demands more CPU than RAM so I'm wondering if there's a NEED to overclock it. I've been doing some research and I'm not sure how much overclocking affects the computer life span.

Yeah I had thought they were going to pull in from the front, but when I turned it on it was backwards. I'll switch them around.
