Description

PROJECT REDRUM was built for gaming, editing and some minor rendering side projects.

Since the ROG Swift PG278Q 27-inch WQHD G-Sync Gaming Monitor has been delayed again, I decided to buy an Asus PB298Q 29 inch Ultra-wide screen monitor for my video editing and rendering projects. this will serve its purpose until the ROG Swift becomes available. After that, this monitor will go to my other work station. So far, loving the PB298Q's crisp and deep color. The extra estate is very cool both in gaming and in work related stuffs.

Feel free to comment and ask questions.

I was ready to pull the trigger for an Asus PB278Q during the build phase but then i saw the ROG Swift PG278Q 27-inch WQHD G-Sync Gaming Monitor coming out on late March - early April on the CES coverage so decided to wait for that :)

Just a heads up that the ROG swift in all of its glory is still a TN panel...Overlord is working with Nvidia to get G-sync on their IPS 1440p Monitors and should be available in Q4 of this year. Sexy Build, +1 for the Bitfenix Cables nice touch.

Its a high quality TN panel though. Just like there are different types of IPS panels (6-bit/8-bit). That monitor is going to perform.

When that monitor comes in...this build will be perfection. How do you like those corsair fans? I was thinking about getting a few for myself.

  • 0 points

Cant wait for it to be available :) I love the fans. the quiet ones are awesome. 8 of them running and you can barely hear them. they also look pretty nice. chose them over performance ones since i can adjust its speed anytime via the fan expert on the ai suite. :)

  • 1 point

When they're on silent, do they move much air? 38 CFM seems so low.

  • 0 points

Yes they do :) you can always adjust them higher if you got a fan controller or via mobo like i do if you think its not enough. some of my office mates even switched from performance editions to quiet ones, since they end up slowing them down anyways due to noise. :)

Awesomest build ever. Not too fancy. Not too simple. When I was choosing the case for mine, I saw that Corsair case and told myself I would get once I get enough money. Feels like I am in a time machine watching my future build

amazing build.

Is it ironic that Miscellaneous, Taxes, Shipping and Handling Fees cost 1024?

  • 1 point

Sad to say yes :( .. Taxes alone ate most of that share added up with the shipping and handling fees.. once you look into the receipts and add them all up.. its really shocking after they piled up like that. $68 on some of the parts as tax seems ok but total them out and it hits you hard specially if most of them aren't bought at the same time. :(

  • 1 point

Wow! This is one of the best builds i've ever seen! Every part is selected to be TOP CLASS! I wish i could give it more than +1!

Only one question though. Why did you go for the 3x120mm on the front instead of 2x140mm(for example 2xAF140's)? Wouldn't it be a bit quieter(not a lot quieter but ok)?

  • 2 points

Thanks :) Went with 3X 120mm SP fans rather than 3X 120mm AF fans or 2X 140mm AF fans for more airflow. Lots of threads and discussions shows that SP fans outperforms the AF fans in almost all scenarios except for unobstructed air passages like rear exhaust or side ventilation. this is due to the fact that the CFM rate of the airflow fans is almost cut in half when there's any obstruction, even in the likes of a mere dust filters. this was also tested by Linustechtips on one of his videos. In the Corsair Air 540 case, there is a magnetic filter aside from the front honeycomb grill mesh upfront so AF fans performance would drastically be less than SP fans :)

Where did you purchase the Sleeved cables?

  • 1 point

The sleeved extension cables were bought from performance-pcs and the individually sleeved actual cables are bought from Corsair.

  • 1 point

Very nice build. Can I just ask you, why did you get the Bit Fenix extentions if you already had Corsair Individually braided cables, vice a versa.

  • 1 point

Thanks. Extensions are purely for aesthetics and looks so it will only get hooked on the components/parts on display like the video cards and the 24 pin and 8 pin cables for the motherboard. wanted a combination of both black and red cables in which you wont be able to get unless you sleeve the cables manually or know someone to do it for you. :)

Thanks, loving the case :) in regards to storage, the 1TB SSD is almost full and im planning to get another one soon. i like my games all installed and is ready anytime i wanna play/replay them. not a big fan of deleting and reinstalling routine. also 1 of the 4tb is almost full after i transferred my massive iTunes library and the other one is halfway from all the saved projects. :)

  • 1 point

I thought the build was amazing until I saw the pics with the red LEDs and I was so disappointed...but then you changed it to white LEDs and it looks so much better! Definitely one of the sexiest builds I've seen on here!

  • 1 point

Thanks :) .. i loved the Red LEDs until the night sets in... it was blinding and was very hard on the eyes. really loving the White ones, not too exaggerated and it highlights and pops out all the red and black accents of the build. way way better than the Red ones :)

  • 1 point

Exactly. What I don't like about colored LEDs is that they kind of mask the colors of all the components. If I was going to use colored LEDs, I might as well not bother with color coordinating the build.

  • 1 point

Decided to go with Red ones at the beginning when i saw how subtle it was on one of NCIX pc builds (Turbine) on one of Linus videos. It turns out it was just getting overpowered by the set's spotlights and not as subtle as it seems (was really aiming for just the highlights and thought it would go well with the Red theme). definitely no colored LEDs for color schemed builds :)

Hey there I was just wondering if you'd suggest the dust filter kit because I was gonna get it but it seems a bit expensive. Would you think I'd be bettter off just getting one for the PSU for like $10.00 on Amazon?

  • 1 point

You could by the filters individually if your not using the rest of the filters :) technically you only want the non exhaust slots to be covered by filters (ex. the 2 hard drive bays at the buttom, PSU side vent, the grills behind the ssd cage and the front. the rest are optional. I bought the kit since i also replaced the front ones as well (the demciflex front filter is better than the stock in my opinion) and is using more than half of the kit.

Still waiting for 2560x1440p ROG Swift PG278Q 27-inch WQHD G-Sync monitor to come out in the market and it uses a display port due to G-sync, with me running SLI, i only have 2 display ports and playing on 2 monitors is pretty weird. with the 2560x1440p ROG Swift PG278Q 27-inch WQHD G-Sync monitor running at 140hz and g-sync, ill be needing to push the frame rates as high as possible to take advantage of it so i think having 1 is just ok :) thanks

May I ask what your opinions are on the keyboard? The Corsair Vengeance K70. I'm in the works of my first build, and I'm keeping a primarily red color scheme. The only thing that I have against the K70 is the mechanical keys. For some reason, I prefer chiclet style keys. However, since it has Cherry MX Red switches, I think I wouldn't have a huge problem with it, considering noise is one of the major disadvantages in my opinion.

  • 1 point

Im loving my K70s cherry reds. i don't think i can go back on using other keyboards aside from this mechs :) also the cherry reds just have enough tacks and aren't as clicky and noisy as the blues and browns so Im pretty sure you will love it as well :)

Where and how did you connect all the corsair fans? What is the difference on the 3 pin vs 4 pin fans? I'm doing the same build as you.

Fans are connected directly to the mother board via wire splitters. 4 pin fans are PWM and can be controlled via MoBo or by software.

  • 1 point

Thanks for posting so many pictures to go with your beautiful build! The 540 looks surprisingly well designed - I love that you can get three fans on the front, mount the HDDs on the bottom of the case, then tuck some SSDs and the PSU around the back. Brilliant! Corsair love all around too. (:

very nice built! congrats!

I was wondering if a 280mm radiator with a push/pull config(4*140mm fans) will fit on the top of the case. It's only 40mm brighter and 2mm higher than the one you've used. Is there enough cleareance to the mobo, the top front fan and rear fan? I've been reading a lot of comments and some say it will fit, some that it will not.

Thx!

  • 1 point

Thanks :) . I'm pretty sure a 280mm radiator (ea. Corsair H110) would fit on a NORMAL config. but push and pull might be a bit tight fit even if you were able to install it. currently on my set up (240mm push pull) i barely have room in between the bottom radiator fans and the mobo , so components you will use will be a big factor (example is what mobo, what brand of fans, etc). on the rear side/back exhaust fan, there wont be any issue because there still lot of room in between the radiator and the fan. hope this helps :)

  • 1 point

I will use the same mobo as you did...as for the fans and radiator I will go for the Corsair AF140(25mm height) and the Corsair H110 (29mm height), so the whole construction will be 79mm 'tall'. Your config is about 2mm shorter...have I got a chance to squeeze my config between the top of the case and the mobo?

I've heard that there should be a 80mm cleareance between the top of the case and all ROG motherboards, but I want to be sure before I buy my parts.

Once again, thank you:)

  • 1 point

1mm allowance is very very tight if i may say.. maybe its possible if you install the 8 pin mobo power cable first and run it through the side. Not to mention, installing the radiator fan cables would be pretty painful as well as you may need special tools to grab or push the cables in between the very small space between the rad fans and mobo. anyway its really hard for me to say since i haven't used a 110 before. if you could option out to a smaller rad like the 240mm it would be great as well since theres not much significant difference in performance for the 2 close loop coolers (just a few degrees diff doesn't matter unless your going to OC aggressively) hope everything turns out ok for your build :)

  • 1 point

I love the case, my concern would be dust inside with that kind of air flow. Do you have anything to prevent that?

I can only say one thing... Damn! I very much hope I can build a rig similar to this when I save up enough. Love the Corsair Air 540 ATX, its pretty well organized and well thought up. If only there was a subscribe button on this site!

  • 1 point

As mentioned on the other comment, still waiting for 2560x1440p ROG Swift PG278Q 27-inch WQHD G-Sync monitor to come out in the market and it uses a display port due to G-sync, with me running SLI, i only have 2 display ports and playing on 2 monitors is pretty weird. with the 2560x1440p ROG Swift PG278Q 27-inch WQHD G-Sync monitor running at 140hz and g-sync, ill be needing to push the frame rates as high as possible to take advantage of it so i think having 1 is just ok :) thanks

I've gotta tell you...your build was one of my inspirations to build the PC that I have now completed. My build log will be going up pretty soon on this site.

If possible can you please outline which tools/software you used for stress testing the components and which tools/software used for benchmarking and temperature monitoring.

I'm trying to stress test, monitor temperature and benchmark my new build.

thanks...

Do have all this storage set up in a raid configuration? That's a lot of storage for a home PC but I assuming if you're doing video editing you must need a lot for that.

That is one lovely machine! You say that's for editing!?. I have a question im hoping you have experience with gpu's. Two 780's or one 780ti? I can get two 780's for little over the price of the ti in the UK, and its strictly 3d editing and rendering, no gaming what so ever :)

cool build but ****** monitor dual 780ti for that 1280x1024 monitor overkill, but ur money

  • 1 point

why do you say you bought a 29 inch asus monitor and the one that lays on ur desk is like 20" i dont get

  • 1 point

just so much money wasted if you dont have a 4k monitor or 3 1080p 0r 1440p monitors, you are not giving those gpu's there full potential

Absolutely love the build sir/ma'am. I plan on using this system as somewhat a of a visual reference to what I plan on doing. A few things are going to be changed to accommodate my choices. I'm stealing those sleeved connectors for my build. Definitely going to be doing the quad sp120's on the h100i for a sick push/pull config. Using the H440, most likely going to be doing MSI mobo and gpu instead of Asus gpu and mobo. My current build didn't really have a color scheme to it, as I didn't care about such things before the build. After the build I want EVERYTHING to be red/black. I have my computer sold for 2 grand and have already started ordering parts for my next system. Got the case and some other things on the way today, haven't decided on a name yet either.

very very late reply, busy in RL lolx. GPU most of the time > than CPU :) so GPU upgrade most of the time is better than cpu upgrade, unless you have a really really old cpu. :)
