Abstract: The goal was to complete an x470 ATX build for less that $1000 USD, and preferably more in the ballpark of $800.
Everything worked out pretty well. I am not a seasoned PC builder or anything, but I did already have a build from a few years ago under my belt and I am very interested in the hobby in general.
I haven't gotten into the liquid cooling stuff or anything yet. I plan to dig into that some day, but for this build we went with air cooling.
The entire build went very smoothly with the exception of two things. For one, I had a terrible time getting the arctic freezer mounted. The cooler came with pre-applied arctic thermal paste and I just intended on using that. But I figured if I was going to do that, I would have to be super careful not to screw it up. Well, long story short, it seemed like I screwed it up. That thing was such a pain to buckle down (but now, in hindsight, now that I have done it once, I am fairly certain I could do it in one go.)
I wanted to just put the cooler on the CPU and screw it down, but I end up taking i off several times, dropping screws, etc. The paste looked like a mess at this point. I didn't have any spare arctic past laying around to repaste it, but I did have some grizzly kryonaut. But alas, I was so fed up with the dang thing, that I just went with the seemingly screwed up paste.
The second issue was more minor: after the build was completed, it turned out that the front audio jacks weren't working. A couple days later I realized that the connector was not properly connected to the board. So I connected it correctly and am pleased to say that it is working fine.
So, build completed, I powered her up, and I was so excited when it posted! I was obviously immediately obsessing over the temps due to my doubts around the integrity of the thermal paste. But, I was very pleased to find out that was getting some very nice temps! It doesn't seem like there are any issues with the cooler mounting or paste job, so I'm leaving it alone for now!
I have the CPU bumped up to 3.8GHz (and not planning to go much if any higher), and we are typically idling around 30-35C. It hasn't gotten much above 60 while gaming. And if the CPU temps spike into the high 60s, which I have seen, it seems like the cooler is able to bring them down very quickly.
That's about it for the build. I'll posted so blurry pics in case anyone wants to check it out.
I should also mention that this is a work in progress. I'd say the bulk of the system is good to go, but I'm obviously going to need some more storage; and the airflow also isn't great as far as I can tell, so I am planning on doing something about that as well.
For additional storage, I am going to go with a SATA SSD or two. All we have in there at the moment is an m.2 250GB boot drive, which is super fast and will definitely work for the time being. Still though, I'm looking forward to getting some more GBs in here.
Airflow is going to be tricky. I would like to get some negative pressure in there, but the case doesn't give me many built in options for additional exhaust fans or anything. I am however going to get a PCI slot blower fans (probably the Antec Cyclone) and mount it next to the GPU. My GPU temps aren't great at the moment: the cards fans don't kick on unless the card is really working; and since the one exhaust fan I have is not doing much, a decent amount of heat i building up around the GPU and kind of just hanging out. Also, the GPU is mount in the PCI slot that is nearest to the CPU socket (because that's what MSI recommended.) So I think a fan like the Antec Cyclone could go a long way to help me move that hot air out of there.
I mean, the GPU isn't super hot or anything, this is just me obsessing about temps. It won't be idling as cool as the CPU no matter what probably. But if I could get it to idle around 40-45 or something, I'd be happier. As it is, it creeps up to the low 50s, then the fan kicks on, knocks it down to the 40s; fan stops, then it creeps back up to the 50s again. And while gaming, the GPU fans are roaring, and the temps haven't gotten above 72C. Not yet anyways.
UPDATE #1: I also wanted to mention that I got the memory up to 2933 MHz. I didn't check compatibility list beforehand and so was kinda worried. But nope, it's all good!
UPDATE #2: Okay, I got the memory running at the full 3000MHz now. (Just had to do it in Advanced settings.) I also lowered the core voltage to 1.26V from 1.32V, and it is nice and stable. Still slightly overclocked to 3.8Ghz and now running from stock voltage basically. It's not a huge deal, but this brought the temps down a bit and I'm feeling pretty confident in my chip, and I'll probably bump the clock speed up a bit more.
I also cleaned the cables up a little bit and added a third intake fan just for the heck of it. I'm gonna post some more pics sometime next week.
UPDATE #3 Sorry, last update. Overclocked to 3.9 GHz. Will probably try to push it up to 4.1- 4.2 GHz. I've included some updated pics to show some improved cable management. Still not great, but better I think.
