Description

Well this took some work! I'm not by any means wealthy, and between various responsibilities I don't get much spending money, so I decided to build the best computer I could for less than $400 including shipping, and I believe I've done that!

I bought the CPU on sale from Fry's, the motherboard on sale from Newegg, I had the hard drive from a previous build I had to sell to help with bills, the ram seems to be newly released and is great value, I bought the PSU from EVGA's b-stock, and the GPU was bought from /r/hardwareswap (shoutout to /u/dringus_khan!).

The case isn't the original one I had in mind, however. That's an adventure of its own. Long story short Tiger Direct is out of business for a reason. The case I did end up getting works great, though, especially for its price. I bought fan for the back of it, however it hasn't arrived yet. The only thing I'd like to have done is get an SSD and get a new HDD, but I can add those in at a later date once I have $70-$80 to throw at them.

I could have spent less on the motherboard, but I didn't want to fully cheap out on it, and I wanted USB 3.0 headers. At the time PCPP was telling me it wouldn't be compatible with my CPU, but I didn't see how that was possible, and when it went on sale I jumped on it anyway. Even so, I was nervous the entire time until the screen lit up!

It runs great! The GPU does run a little hot but not enough to be worried about . All in all I'm very happy with how it turned out, and all for more than $100 less than I had sold my previous computer for. Funnily enough it's even faster than my old one, so I guess all's well that ends well.

I built this to play Fallout 4 (once I can actually afford it) and other RPGs, as well as FPSs and MMOs. It'll get a lot of use in the future!

Ps. The lamp isn't actually there, it's on my desk now.

Love the build man, i think you did a wonderful job. If you ever get any spare cash, i would say get a cpu cooler, especially considering the smaller(but really cool) case. I hope you enjoy that computer man.

Agreed. The Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO is a great choice and is very inexpensive - as long as it fits.

it doesn't fit in that case

Thanks! I have been enjoying it immensely. A friend gifted me Fallout and I'm able to play it on Ultra. :)

Uuuntil I reached more populated areas, then had to bump it down a bit, haha.

A $300 build seems like it wouldn't play Fallout 4, but I'm hecka impressed!

This is an awesome build, and I like the video card.

It's actually $400, but yeah I was pretty glad it could! On mostly-high settings (with textures max though, can't bear to put that down) I was able to get steady 50+ fps. And thanks!

I see an awesome looking GPU and then a pair of feet to wrap up this build. A very interesting process.

At the time PCPP was telling me it wouldn't be compatible with my CPU, but I didn't see how that was possible, and when it went on sale I jumped on it anyway. Even so, I was nervous the entire time until the screen lit up!

Are you talking about the MOBO you have now or something else? PCPP compatibility flag may flag a MOBO more so about BIOS in need of update. Sometimes it's true but most of the time it's not required.
Plus one for what you made here. Especially waiting for deals and upgrading your parts when able to. That GPU looks so cool.

The mobo I have. It said it wasn't compatible at all, regardless of bios update, I let him know and it's fixed, though. And thanks! I love the gpu, it's gorgeous.

As for the GPU. I can't seem to find it anywhere, for near that price range. Anybody else?

Would this be a good replacement for the GPU? XFX Radeon R9 280X Except for the 35$ difference.

I bought it off of another redditor on the subreddit hardwareswap, it gets posted every now and then for $130-$150.

Hey man quick question, I'm purchasing a really similar build to you as I'm also on a tight budget xD I was really looking foward to using that mobo until I found out the i3 4170 wasnt on the cpu support list while similar cpu's were. Although partpicker said its compatible along with other people who also used it in there build. I mean its a lga 1150 and so is the cpu so i'm not sure why gigabyte doesnt show the i3 4170. So the question is should I get this motherboard? Did you have any bios troubles or installing troubles while installing it?

I'm probably replying too late to matter (sorry about that!), but yeah the mobo works great with this processor, absolutely no problems so far.

How does this perform in CS:GO(if you play it,however if it runs fallout it probably does well) and what do you think about the Pentium 4400,would it be a cheaper alternative to the i3?

Sorry about the late reply! I haven't played CS:GO in a while, but I definitely got 70+ fps from what I remember, and that would be an okay replacement, though it only has 2 threads instead of 4.

did you have any issues installing windows? i have the same motherboard and processor and i keep getting kernal security failure when trying to install windows.

Hey, hope you solved your issue. I did not have a problem installing windows so I couldn't help you, there. I installed 8.1 (contrary to my list).
