Description

So I decided to a custom loop using EK parts on my first build. This is my first ever loop.I have the parts to do a PETG loop, but I decided to use the flex tubes. When I go to switch out the fluid in 6 months or so, I will swap it out. Until then, I will practice doing some bends on incorrect tubing I bought.

On air, the top GPU would max out at 84C and the bottom one would get to 78C under load. After I changed the build to liquid cool all my parts, the top GPU gets to 37C and the bottom stays at 35. Not bad if I do say so myself.

The CPU temp seems a little high with the loop. but it could be because 1) I am using a 7700K and we all know they are like frying pans and 2) the liquid gets to my GPUs first which means the heat has not had a chance to cool through a rad before getting to the CPU. I will take this into account when I do the PETG loop.

The reservoir in the back side of the case. Not really much room to put it in front. I am going to work on the cable management today and will upload a pic of it later. I just wish Corsair would make a clear view side for the case.

Overall, I am very pleased with this system. Thanks for taking the time to look at my build!

So I decided to go in and do the cable management in the back area. While organizing my cables, I noticed the longest run (1st pic for reference) was kinked in the back. Got it fixed and by doing so, it made the build look cleaner and more tidy (IMO). I am glad I did noticed it and fixed it. I would have cried.

For some reason, my build says 45Ghz as my CPU speed. I typed in 5Ghz. Not sure how that happened, but it makes me laugh that some people really think I got it that high haha!

Today after work I plan on taking photos with my good camera. I just used my phone to upload the pictures, but I do not think it does my PC justice. I may even have to pull out the strobes :)

So my EK GPU blocks came with a plastic cover that says what card is in the system. I painted it silver to try and match my system. I only have one on for now because of the way my loop is routed on the serial block for my GPUs. I will try to upload a pic later.

So someone brought up to me that I basically skimped out on the audio for my build. You know what? He was right! I ordered myself a pair of Sennheiser HD 700s, a ModMic 5, a Schiit Bifrost Multibit DAC, and a Schiit Valhalla 2 amplifier. I really do miss having good audio equipment.

Wow! My build got featured today! There are so many great build out there. I am humbled.

So the BX (Military Store on base) has been getting a lot of new peripherals lately. I am surprised that they have been getting nice prebuilt towers tbh. The part I was excited about was the Corsair K70 RGB keyboard and Corsair M65 RGB mouse. Annnnnnnnnd bought!

Part Reviews

Motherboard

When I decided to start my build I picked the Formula IX first before any other part and built around that. I love the factory EK Crosschill vram block. Be cautious about using flex tubes if you plan on doing what I did with my build. I honestly cannot believe it did not kink going from my CPU to the vram.

Memory

Beautiful and performs very well. As far as the RGB feature, you will not find anything better. The colors are bright and very fluid. Knocked a star off only because of the price. If you do not care about the RGB aspect of RAM, you can get some very affordable high performance RAM for much cheaper.

Storage

BLAZING FAST! My PC boots up in 3 seconds. It is insane. If you are able to take advantage of the NVME feature, you will enjoy it. It is very small and looks like a stick of gum. If you want to save yourself a hundred bucks, go with the EVO. The warranty is not as long, but most performs just as well.

Video Card

I do not really need to say much. It's a FE reference card. Most people buy these because they want the newest tech the moment it releases or because you plan on watercooling. I run a couple in SLI with EK blocks and I could not be more happy.

Case

I love this case! Lots of room for GPUs, Fans (I have seven 120mm on rads and one 140mm as exhaust), radiators, and can accommodate an EATX board. I currently have my reservoir w/built in pump in the back of the case.

The only things wrong with the case IMO would be that while the front of the case and PSU exhaust have mesh air filters, the top and bottom do not get one. If you want, put some pantyhose in their places and you should be gtg.

Power Supply

It's a PSU. It powers my stuff with no issues.

Case Fan

These Static Pressure fans do a great job cooling my rads. The Magnetic Levitation (hence ML) feature is amazing. I hear nothing at low speeds. I literally hear nothing but my pump going and even that is really quiet. Having the LEDs come from the center of the fan gives it a more balanced look.

Case Accessory

Be wary. I received the kit and one of the four RGB strips did not work. It ook NZXT a month to get me a replacement. When it works, it works great! The RGB spectrum wave is my favorite.

The only issue I have with it is that you are required to have this in order to use the NZXT AER fans.

Speakers

Good sound and fits my needs when I am not using my headphones. It would have been nice to have all the speaker light up white like the subwoofer does.

The only gripe I have are the volume buttons. They can be very finicky.

Custom

You need on to connect more than one card. It works great and the switch at the bottom lets you change the color. You can have the EVGA logo in White, Red, Blue, or Green.

Custom

Mobos these days are limiting the amount of USB 2.0 headers. My specific board only has one. I needed to connect an NZXT Hue+, but needed another USB 2.0 header. Here is the fix!

Who spends more then $7K on a build and only uploads 4 photos!!!!

Sorry, now that i have got that out of me, I would like to congratulate you on such a gorgeous build. I wish mine were like this!

I wanted a 4k, but the new 144hz (cards can't even get to that refresh rate) HDR monitors were not and are not out yet.

Actually, there are loads of games that can reach 144fps on ultra settings. Try running BF1 and you should see that it gets 130fps on 4k ultra (with 2 1080 Tis), same with GTA 5 and Destiny. it's mainly just the most demanding of games or the poorly optimized that can't reach high frame rates on ultra.

If you paid $7400 for your entire PC, you need to buy a better headphone and mic. Buy a sennheiser 598 SE and a modmic for superior audio for gaming and music AND so that people you talk to online will hear you clearly as well. The build looks really good too but idk if you used any anti-growth stuff in your loop. Just to prevent algae growing in your loop. +1 for an amazing build.

  • 1 point

I wanted a headset that could use on my PS4 as well. I used to own a pair of Senn HD 650's along with a mod mic and i loved them. Before that i owned a pair of Senn PC360's. I sold them both because they were sitting there collecting dust because i stopped using them on my old prebuilt computer that I never used and i really, really regret selling them. Those were probably my favorite gaming cans. The mic was perfect! If I do get another pair in the future, it will be a pair of HD 800's. I just need to get an damn good amp to run them as well. I used EK's premixed fluid which already has growth inhibitors. Thanks for the advice!

  • 1 point

So after thinking about this comment all day I realized you were right. I do need to upgrade the sound quality. I just ordered myself a pair of Sennheiser HD 700's, a Schiit Valhalla Amp, and Schiit Bitfrost DAC.

  • 2 points

Nice rebuild bruh! It looks good! I don't think water cooling is for me though....I'm too nervous bout it LOL! But I will be using the Fractal 360 or a H100 iv2 to cool my 2 MSI Gaming X 1080Ti's. All in all, this is a awesome case and you did great. I'll be starting on mine soon.

  • 1 point

Doing soft tubes is extremely easy! Don't be afraid of it. Just take your time. There is a lot of room for error and there is nothing to worry about. If you have a piece that is too long, you can just snip it off. If you do decide to get into doing a loop, be sure to buy extra tubing for those times you mess up. I am practicing bends on PETG right now. I hope I do not screw this up. It is not for everyone, but if you do decide to go this route, you will be happy with the performance.

  • 2 points

Beautiful clean build man! I'm about to go full force on my water cooling, would you recommend skipping soft tube and go straight to PETG? I see you mention that you will move to that.

  • 2 points

So I bought the wrong PETG tubing and I am using it to practice bends. It takes some practice. Just take the time to plan out the bends and be sure to buy extra PETG in case you make mistakes. The biggest piece of advice I can give is to also make sure you install a drain. I am trying to figure out the best way to drain my setup now and it is going to be a chore. Good luck!

  • 2 points

BEAUTIFUL! ... I love the Crystal feel to it ... puts my build to shame :(

  • 1 point

I had RGB fans in it till all my EK stuff came in. It was loud (fans) and LOUD (color). My wife hated it. So when I decided to switch over fans, I went with ones that were quiet and not so bright. I wanted it to be simple.

No build should be shamed. If you put the effort in and you are happy, then enjoy it!

Bottom fans appear to be exhausting. So 5 exhaust and 3 intake; you're a bit negative pressure here. Plus you're fighting convection... not a good idea. Convection is more powerful than people usually give credit for.

I would rotate the bottom fans to intake. You should definitely see better temps and less dust in the case, as you'll be slightly positive at that point.

  • 1 point

I cannot believe I didn't think about the positive airflow. You are correct that I have a negative airflow going on. I am going to switch the bottoms to be intakes as soon as I am done replying.

  • 2 points

I think Jayztwocents did a video on how radiator position in a loop doesn't make a difference in CPU temps (meaning putting a rad between the gpu and cpu wouldn't lower cpu temps) because science and stuff. 7700ks just run hot I guess, tough luck. (I'll link the vid when I find it)

  • 3 points

i was searching through the comments to see if anyone else said this. i saw the same video by jayz and was going to comment that you are really just establishing an equilibrium temperature so it shouldnt matter where in the loop your pieces are.

I love the look of this thing, seriously, it's amazing. The fluid not having any color in it just "fits". Plus those ML fans, which look really nice. Just a quick question though, how is slightly scaling? A lot of people have mentioned SLI scaling with these cards not being great whatsoever. One of the reasons I don't wanna get a second.

  • 1 point

Thank you! I really do like the look of the clear fluid. I ordered the EK Vardar fans, but then I seen these! I just wanted to order fans that would not piss my wife off. As far as the scaling...i would not recommend going SLI with these cards. You are correct, the scaling is not the greatest. If you are not in a hurry, just wait for Volta architecture.

  • 1 point

Yeah, I already bought a single 1080 Ti. Gonna be set for a while hopefully lol. Maybe scaling will get better as games are actually written to take a red vantage of 2 of these things.

  • 1 point

That is one of the reasons I bought two even after people kept telling me that SLI is not supported blah, blah, blah. Eventually, they will release some support and that is all that matters to me.

  • 2 points

Yeah, I placed my bets on SLI a while ago with 2 1070s, hoping multi gpu really would take off. It didn't. Oh well. Maybe I'll grab a second when they're cheap lol.

  • 1 point

Absolutely beautiful... Question though... I keep on seeing dual 1080 ti's lately... How necessary is that right now? I have a 1080 and don't wanna get one ti because I feel it's too much

  • 2 points

  • 1 point

The speakers did not match before. Now that they do, I did not even notice! Thanks for pointing that out.

  • 1 point

Not really necessary. I just wanted it to be a OP. I like SLI not only for performance, but aesthetics as well.

  • 2 points

Oh okay... I love sli look too but last time I had it was a few years back and it was 2/780 gtx's. I ran into problems with certain games and sli so I sold them and bought a 980 ti... I have a 1080 and often think of pairing up

Dang, this is crazy. I really like the new 740. Thought about swapping my 540 air for this one. Is it bigger. This build is way nice.

  • 1 point

I don't know if it is bigger than the Air 540? This is my first build, so I don't have much to compare it too.

I personally would have went with a 6700k especially if you're using for gaming/streaming and editing. Lots of fans though, must be nice to game on.

  • 2 points

Why? There's no reason to go with a previous generation i7 when he has dual 1080 ti's.

I agree completely. It's just that having two 1080 ti's obviously shows he wants to go the extra mile, and pointing that out hopefully shows how ridiculous it would be to pair the most powerful GPU on the market and a previous gen i7.

  • 1 point

I just went with what was the most current i7 processor. A little overkill? Yes, but after seeing built, I think it is worth it.

  • 1 point

it was im going for one as well in my parts list my build should be done soon.

  • 1 point

there's literally zero advantage to using a 6700k over a 7700 besides temps, but in a custom loop that can handle the head even that is irrelevant.

  • 1 point

Do you plane on having separate loops for the cpu and gpu?

  • 1 point

When I go to PETG tubing in about a 10 days or so, I plan on having the fluid cooled by one of the rads.

Nice clean build and it looks great. I've got the same Corsair fans you got except in 140mm. Mine are still noticeable at the lowest setting. But once I crank them up to 100% they are loud as hell. They deff get the job done. I have 3 of them, 2 in the front and one in the rear. Keeps everything nice and cool.

  • 1 point

They are really loud when cranked. I'm glad this doesn't ever get hot enough to make my fans spin.

I got a pump/res combo.

But where? xD

  • 1 point

Also, what are you planning on running on it? And what kind of FPS ranges are you doing?

  • 1 point

I am mainly just using my rig for gaming and running Photoshop for photo and video editing.

  • 1 point

Just out of curiosity, what are your CPU temps?

  • 1 point

I decided to lower the CPU to 4.8 and my idle temp is 35 degrees. During stress testing at 100% load it goes to 69 degrees.

  • 1 point

A build like that and you're using soft tubing?

  • 1 point

I was wondering how high you were able to pump up the clocks of those FE 1080ti's with a custom water loop, it would be cool to compare it with the KINGPIN edition when it comes out and somebody does the same thing with them haha

  • 1 point

I'm going to play with it some more when I get home.

  • 1 point

I would have thought you would spend more on the CPU considering the rest of the build. Anyways, looks nice, good build, happy gaming

  • 1 point

All I do is game, so the 7700K is fine.

  • 1 point

I have a 7700k and trust me it is great but I just would have thought you would have went with a better processor considering the GPUs. All around trust me your build is great, I just expected something like a threadripper or something haha.

  • 2 points

The threadripper wasn't out when I built it. If I kept listening to everyone to wait, I wouldn't have a PC. When the 7980XE comes out, I plan on upgrading to that. Hopefully it still releases at the end of the year.

Amazing build, Sir. How long it took you to build that Master Piece? Can I know what furniture is that to hold the desktop and the kb/m? Looking for something like that that doesn't take up too much space.

  • 2 points

Thanks! I took me about 20 hours to build it. I honestly do not remember what model of desk it is, but I do know it is Whalen Furniture. I bought it in 2012. I tried doing a search for it and I am unable to find it.

  • 1 point

Amazing build, man! Question though, what do you do with your PC that would require having 2 1080 Ti's in SLI?

  • 1 point

Honestly, I just game. The games I do play (Destiny and Witcher 3) take advantage of SLI. I plan on upgrading to a 4K 144Hz HDR monitor when it releases next year. 1080 Ti's in SLI will not even come close to getting to that framerate, but it will help.

Hey, i really like your build, i have a couple questions for you, 1. Was the liquid cooling process hard and is it worth it? 2. How was it working with the FORMULA Motherboard? 3. Would you mind looking at my build here: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/ and giving me some feedback. You can message me on twitter (ΛMΣЯП) if you want to talk about it further. I'm new to the PC community and i want to hear how it was from someone with a build that looks of godlike quality.

Thanks

It is what is already installed on the motherboard. Asus is starting to make all the high end boards with water cooling in mind. It is an EK Crosschill.
